NASHIK: As many as three Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses operated for the first time on Monday during the ongoing strike from its Pimgalgaon depot. An MSRTC official said this was the third depot from where buses, though a handful few, have started operations adding that they were not sure if these buses would continue tomorrow (on Tuesday) as well. In the past too several buses started from Nashik-1 depot in Nashik city, but from the next day the MSRTC drivers and conductors failed to get back to work. “We have three buses rolling out from Pimgalgaon depot for the first time during the strike period. The buses carried intra-district passengers to various locations. This is a good sign and we hope that the things improve further,” a senior officer from the Nashik division of MSRTC said. This is the third depot after Sinnar and Lasalgaon from where two and five buses respectively have been plying within Nashik district during the past several days. The official also pointed out that there were number of bus drivers and conductors who were ready to resume their services, but were scared of being targeted by their colleagues who are protesting. “We have little role in this as they were already in talks with the people not to target the ones who have resumed duty. We, however, have transferred as many as 20 employees from their regular appointments to other areas and depots,” he said. “With this we have now transferred a total of 45 employees from their regular offices. Many of these are the ones who have been instigating the employees. Hence, the action was taken,” he added. The state transport utility has suspended eight more people — taking the total number of suspensions till date to 457. There are in all 5,290 employees in Nashik division and the action of suspension was carried as per the government orders as these people failed to get back to work.

BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday objected to the name of freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar being 'missing' at the ongoing annual Marathi literary meet at Nashik in north Maharashtra. The late Hindutva ideologue was born at Bhagur near Nashik in 1883. There was a demand from some quarters that a pandal at the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan, being held at Bhujbal Knowledge City, be named for Savarkar.Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal is involved in the organization of this year's meet. Speaking to reporters here, Fadnavis said Savarkar had presided over both the Marathi literary meet and Marathi theatre conference, and he had also been president of the Marathi Patrakar Sangh, a journalists' union."He would be probably the only person to have achieved this feat and still his name is missing from the entire event," the BJP leader said. “He is an idol for us and if our idols are not respected, why should we even bother to go there,” said Fadnavis, a former chief minister. He also said the BJP welcomed the decision to name the venue of the literary meet as 'Kusumagraj Nagari', after the Jnanpith award winner Marathi poet late V V Shirwadkar (who wrote poetry under the pen-name 'Kusumagraj'). “We welcome the decision to name the venue after Kusumagraj. But it seems his name was used only to counter a possible demand to name it after Savarkar," Fadnavis said."Savarkar was not just a freedom fighter. He wrote essays, plays, composed verse, was a scholar of grammar, historian and introduced many new words in Marathi," the BJP leader added. Check out DH's latest videos:

PUNE: A 23-year-old automobile company employee, who volunteered to help an elderly woman hit by a vehicle on the Pune-Nashik highway in Chakan early Tuesday morning, died after a speeding bus knocked him down in the same spot. The accident occurred around 5.30am at Balajinagar in Chakan when victim Pawan Koli of Medankarwadi was waiting for his office bus. “Koli had done an ITI course and was working in an automobile company plant in Chakan,” his room-mate Sachin Patil told TOI. Assistant sub-inspector Suresh Gorde of the Chakan police said that on Tuesday around 5.30am, Koli and his colleagues were waiting for their company bus near a fuel-refilling station at Balajinagar in Chakan. “An elderly woman was crossing the Pune-Nashik highway when a vehicle hit her in front of Koli and his colleagues,” Gorde said. He added that Koli noticed that the woman fell on the road and he ran towards her and helped her stand up. “The woman suffered minor injuries. He then helped the woman cross the highway but before he could return to his colleagues, a speeding bus knocked him down,” Gorde said. He said Koli suffered injuries in his head, chest and right leg. “Though his colleagues rushed him to a hospital immediately, he was pronounced brought dead by the doctors,” Gorde said. He added that the bus driver did not stop after the hit, and Koli’s colleagues were thus unable to see the registration number of the vehicle. “They told us that it was a white bus that drove towards Nashik. It could be a bus ferrying employees of some company in Chakan MIDC,” Gorde said. He said there are CCTV cameras installed at the nearby gas station. “But incidentally the cameras couldn’t get a grab of the accident site,” Gorde said. Koli is survived by parents and younger brother. “His body was sent to his native village in Jalgaon district for cremation,” Patil said.

The employees from 13 depots and divisional workshop in Nashik gathered at the divisional office and decided to stay put on their demand of complete merger of the corporation with the state government, saying the hike in salary announced by the state government was never part of their demands. “The government, in the past several times, has announced hike in salary, dearness allowances, house rent, among others and every time part of the hike was passed on to the employees and some part was held back or not paid at all. This time it is a do-or-die situation for us.” Meanwhile, MSRTC officials, who held several meetings and rounds of talks with the employees, said the employees did not seem to be in the mood to end the agitation. “We have been in talks with employees asking them to resume work. As directed, we will wait till 8 am on Friday. Serious action would be taken against those not resuming work,” an MSRTC official said. End agitaion: Shetti Former MP and leader of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana Raju Shetti appealed to the MSRTC employees to end their strike. “Not all demands can be met in one go and there is a limit to stretch things. NASHIK: The latest data on Covid-19 vaccination shows that the five districts of North Maharashtra have coverage much below the state average. On November 17, the state average of vaccination of the first dose is over 76% and it is nearly 39% for the second dose. The vaccination in Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nandurbar districts is significantly lower than it. In fact, Nandurbar is ranked at the bottom in the state. Nandurbar’s district health officer Dr Mahendra Chavan said they were hoping that vaccine coverage improves with the door-to-door drive. “We are aiming to vaccinate 70% of the beneficiaries with at least the first dose by this month-end,” he added. The health authorities from the region have blamed ‘vaccine hesitancy’ for the low coverage. In Nashik city, the health department officials said that beneficiaries of some pockets are still not keen to take the vaccine. In Nashik district, a sizeable population of Malegaon is yet to take their first dose. Covid-19 coordinator of Dhule, Dr Vishal Patil, said that people are not forthcoming to take their shots as the cases have reduced and things are back to normal. Jalgaon civil surgeon Dr N S Chavan said even they have started a door-to-door vaccination programme.

NASHIK: The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) — reeling under severe manpower crunch that, in turn, is impacting its normal functioning — has decided to recruit over 500 temporary staff on honorarium basis for a period of 11 months. A proposal to this regard will be tabled in the general body meeting of the NMC on Wednesday. Mayor Satish Kulkarni said there is a need for around 350 employees in the property and water tax departments, but currently only 110 staffers are working in these two departments that are involved in collecting revenue for the civic body. “Both property and water tax dues are totally estimated at over Rs 500 crore. The revenue of the civic body through property and water taxes has already been affected due to the pandemic, and inadequate workforce is adding to the problem,” Kulkarni said. “The recruitment of temporary staff will help the NMC increase the property and water tax collection to some extent and the pressure on the existing manpower will also reduce. From sanitation workers to engineers all will be recruited on honorarium basis,” he added. Over 2,000 posts are vacant in various departments of the NMC and around 40 employees and officials are getting retired every month. “Hence, existing staff is under tremendous pressure and it is affecting their health,” he said. “The NMC could not recruit on vacant posts earlier as administrative cost was over 35%. Hence, the civic body is mulling to recruit temporary manpower on honorarium basis,” he added. The fire brigade department is also facing a severe workforce crunch. According to the fire department, the NMC has 151 government-approved posts of firemen, of which, 58 are vacant. Moreover, the civic body has 15 government-approved posts of fire officers of which 11 are vacant. The situation is similar to the other departments of the civic body.

Bapusaheb Nagargoje, the medical superintendent of NMC, said so far, 131 teams of health employees have been formed for the task. They have already started going door-to-door in the city to encourage people to get the Covid vaccines. NMC officials said 74% of the beneficiaries in Nashik city have been partly or fully vaccinated. But the response to vaccination for the age group between 18 and 44 years has been poor. The number of teams will be increased up to 650 in the next few days for the drive to go door-to-door to encourage beneficiaries to get vaccinated at the earliest. NASHIK: NCP chief Sharad Pawar, on Monday, alleged that the recent incidents of violence in Amravati, Malegaon and Nanded were engineered by some opposition parties.Without naming any particular party, he said these opposition parties were “frustrated”. “It should be every resident’s responsibility to make sure that such incidents do not take place in Maharashtra. There is no reason for violence in here based on what has happened in Tripura,” Pawar told reporters in Nashik. Responding to questions, the NCP chief said he suspected that such violence is being unleashed by vested interests as the assembly elections are due in some states, including Uttar Pradesh. Lauding chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, Pawar said the CM is doing a good job and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government will complete its term. “The Opposition has predicted the MVA government’s downfall since the day the three-party coalition came to power. I am confident that the MVA will complete its term,” he said. According to him, the state is facing a severe financial crisis and the ongoing ST employees strike is inconveniencing the common people. Pawar said he did not agree with the demand to merge the transport utility with the state government. “The state government and MSRTC representatives should sit down and find a solution to the problems,” he added. Later, he inaugurate the two-day convention of the Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahamandal. Saying that the state’s financial condition was not very good, Pawar added that only the proper demand of the mahamandal would be addressed. Pawar, Bhujbal condole death of Purandare NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Nashik district guardian minister Chhagan Bhujbal condoled the death of noted historian and author Babasaheb Purandare. Pawar said Maharashtra has lost a gem who excelled in the field of literature and arts.

PUNE: From offering attractive prizes through a lucky draw to mobilising students for motivating unvaccinated population, health officials in Maharashtra are going the extra mile to woo citizens to take the Covid shot. The officials are using creative methods like organising street plays and providing door-step counselling to push vaccination, besides deploying educational tools like posters and hoardings. State immunisation officer Sachin Desai said, “District collectors are making use of different creative methods to achieve 100% vaccination coverage.” In Chandrapur, the civic body is offering electronic and home appliances under a lucky draw to ensure that 39,000 unvaccinated citizens come forward to take the first shot. “We don’t want to leave any stone unturned. An LED TV, a refrigerator, a washing machine and 10 mixer grinders would be awarded to the citizens through the lucky draw initiative. This move is improving the vaccination numbers to some extent in Chandrapur,” municipal commissioner Rajesh Mohite said. “The winners will be announced after November 24,” Mohite said. The district administration in Chandrapur is also pasting stickers outside commercial establishments with unvaccinated staff to keep customers informed. In Yavatmal, where over 10 lakh citizens are yet to take the first dose, the administration is seeking the help of schoolchildren. Akola resident deputy collector Sanjay Khadse said they would give ‘Sanman-Patra’ (felicitation certificates) to children who convince unvaccinated people in their homes and localities. The vaccination in Nashik city and rural parts of the district has crossed 74%, but the vaccination has remained slow in the limits of Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) where only 27% of the beneficiaries have been administered the first dose of the vaccines. Aurangabad’s immunisation officer Smita Nalgirkar said, “We are carrying out door-to-door visits of health teams. Besides, we are making phone calls and spreading public awareness in general,” Nalgirkar said. Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 3 had held a virtual meeting involving authorities from Aurangabad and other districts where vaccination coverage is relatively lower. NAGPUR: Against the backdrop of recent incidents of violence in Amravati and other cities in Maharashtra, the state police headquarters has deputed four senior Additional Director General (ADG) rank officers to sensitive police ranges and cities to ensure that there is no flare-up, a senior official said on Sunday. In the police department, the police ranges are usually headed by an Inspector General of Police (IGP) rank officer. The ADG is one rank senior to the IGP, the official explained. He told PTI that the decision to depute four senior ADGs in various police ranges was taken by Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Pandey after a meeting between top police officers and state Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil. The top police brass believed that ADG-rank officers would use their expertise in policing in effectively maintaining the communal harmony in the sensitive areas, sources said. On Saturday, a curfew was clamped in Amravati city in east Maharashtra for four days and Internet services were shut down after a mob hurled stones at shops during a Bandh (shut-down) allegedly organised by local BJP workers in protest against the rallies organised by Muslim organisations the day before to condemn the recent violence in Tripura, police had said. On Friday, stone-pelting was reported during rallies taken out by Muslim organisations in Amravati, Nanded, Malegaon (in Nashik district), Washim and Yavatmal. Accordingly, ADG (Law and Order), Maharashtra, Rajinder Singh reached Amravati by road on Saturday evening. He will camp there to maintain law and order, another senior police official said. The Amravati police range covers Amravati, Akola, Buldana, Yavatmal and Washim districts. ADG (Traffic) Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay has been asked to monitor the situation in Nagpur city, and Nagpur and Gadchiroli police Ranges, he said. The Nagpur police range covers Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara and Chandrapur districts while Gadchiroli and Gondia districts come under the Gadchiroli range. Gadchiroli DIG, Sandip Patil, has been holding the additional charge as Amravati city police commissioner. ADG (Training) Sanjay Kumar reached Aurangabad city in the Marathwada region where he will monitor the situation in Aurangabad city, and Aurangabad and Nanded police ranges. Aurangabad Rural, Jalna, Beed and Osmanabad districts come under the Aurangabad police range while Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded and Latur districts fall under the Nanded police range. ADG (Special Operations) Pravin Salunkhe will be in Nashik city. The Nashik police range covers Nashik, Jalgaon, Nandurbar, Dhule and Ahmednagar districts.

NASHIK: District guardian minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday warned that the administration will be forced to make it mandatory for beneficiaries to get partially vaccinated for getting rations and LPG cylinders — a system that has been put in place by the Aurangabad administration. Addressing reporters after a Covid reviewing meeting, Bhujbal said the Nashik administration would monitor the pace of vaccination in the district for the next 8-10 days and if it remains sluggish, the beneficiaries who are not taking the jabs would be denied food grains distributed through public distribution system (PDS) shops and LPG cylinders. Sharing the vaccination data of Nashik, Bhujbal said a total 1.02 crore doses are to be administered to the 51 lakh beneficiaries above the age of 18. “But so far, only 49 lakh doses have been administered. Around 16 lakh beneficiaries have not even taken the first dose. The pace of vaccination in Nashik is still sluggish and there is a need to improve the coverage,” he said. According to the Bhujbal, low vaccination coverage in Malegaon is concerning. “I will look into the reasons for the poor response to vaccination in Malegaon city and steps would be taken to improve the coverage in the textile town,” he said. “The district has less than 500 active Covid patients and the positivity rate has reduced to 1.4%. But we are prepared for any outbreak and have made arrangements for adequate supply of medical oxygen,” he added. Bhujbal also appealed to the people to follow Covid appropriate behaviour to prevent spread of the infection.

NASHIK: In just three days, the temperature in Nashik fell by 7.7 degrees to settle at 12.7 degrees celsius on Wednesday. Just a day earlier, the city’s minimum was 13.4 degrees celsius, and it was relatively warmer at 20.4 degrees celsius past Sunday. According to the IMD officials, the sky will stay clear and the minimum temperature will be in the same range for the next two days. But starting Saturday, cloudy weather will return and the minimum temperature will increase 3 degrees. The maximum temperature on Wednesday was at 29.1 degrees celsius. Jalgaon, meanwhile, was the coldest city in the state with minimum temperature of 11 degrees celsius on Wednesday — a departure of 5 degrees from the normal. The maximum temperature of the city was 32 degrees celsius. The minimum temperature in Niphad, Nashik’s major grape belt, has declined by 10.5 degrees in the past three days. According to the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth’s weather station, at its wheat research centre at Niphad, the minimum temperature was 11 degrees celsius on Wednesday. According to the grape farmers, temperatures below 7 degrees celsius can adversely affect the vineyards. However, the pruning of all the vineyards was completed by October. Therefore, the drop in temperature is not a matter of grave concern now. Meanwhile, with the drop in minimum temperature, many citizens have started early morning walks. Jogging tracks in Nashik city have seen a rise in daily footfall over the past few days.

PUNE: Shivajinagar was the coldest place in Maharashtra on Tuesday at 12.7°C — three notches below the normal minimum temperature. Popular hill station Mahabaleshwar at 14.1°C was even warmer than the city. The minimum temperature in Lohagaon was 12.7°C, a degree below normal. Jalgaon in north Maharashtra and Gondia in Vidarbha recorded the minimum temperature of 13°C each. In the Marathwada region, Aurangabad was the coldest place at 13.6°C, while Nashik in Madhya Maharashtra, which also includes Pune, recorded a minimum temperature of 13.4°C. “Night temperatures across Maharashtra dropped from Monday under the influence of the northerly wind entering the state. The night temperatures will remain below the normal level by one or two degrees till November 13,” said a senior official from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune. From November 14, the night temperature of the city was expected to rise by 1-2°C, with partly cloudy conditions in the evening hours, said the official. “A weather system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal from November 13. Under its influence, the southeasterly wind will bring moisture over the state. It will ultimately result in the formation of cloudy conditions. There is also a chance of light rainfall in some parts of the state on November 15. The night temperatures are likely to increase from November 14 due to these conditions,” the official said. The city’s winter season usually prevails between November and January. The night temperature remains in the range of 10-15°C. The city had experienced warmer nights because of the light rainfall in the evening hours last week. A Met official said, “We have noticed variations in the minimum temperatures in the Chinchwad and Magarpatta weather stations.” Another IMD official said, “The minimum temperatures were recorded in the range of 16-19°C. We do not know the exact reason behind the variations in the temperature at these stations.”

Thane: A tempo driver and his assistant were killed after their vehicle rammed into a stationary container on the Nashik highway at Kharegaon, early on Sunday, said police. Senior inspector Manohar Awhad at the Kalwa police station said the incident occurred around 5.30am when the tempo carrying poultry was on its way to Mumbai from Nashik. The driver, Salman Khan (34), allegedly failed to notice the container parked midway on the Thane-bound lane and rammed into it before he could apply the brakes. The impact of the collision was such that the driver’s cabin was mangled trapping Khan and his assistant Feroz Khan inside. The duo succumbed to their injuries before they could be rescued. The mishap led to a traffic jam on the stretch which was cleared nearly two hours later, police informed. “Prima facie, it seems the container driver was at fault as he parked the vehicle on the highway without switching on the indicators. The container driver fled after the mishap. We have registered a case against him for the deaths,” said Awhad. In another incident, reported around 2am on Sunday, a food delivery boy identified as Shivraj Rathod (34) was riding a bike and was on his way home when he was hit by an unidentified vehicle near the Patlipada bridge. “The vehicle sped off while injured Rathod, who suffered major injuries to his limbs, was rushed to a private hospital,” informed rescue officials.
