MUMBAI: While Eknath Shinde’s rebellion took Shiv Sena and MVA by surprise, the rebellion was in the works for a few months, though the Rajya Sabha and Maharashtra MLC elections debacle was a trigger. Monday, afternoon: Soon after casting their votes (for MLC polls), several Sena MLAs leave for Surat. Eknath Shinde leaves for Surat too. Three Sena ministers reportedly join him. Tuesday, 8.30 am: Sena leadership gets news about rebellion 11 am | Sena MP Sanjay Raut says contact established with Shinde. Blames BJP for “conspiracy”, says Sena MLAs being prevented from returning. Noon | Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray meets party MLAs & leaders at his official residence, Varsha. Only 19 MLAs turn up. Party sends Uddhav’s aide Milind Narvekar and Thane legislator Ravindra Phatak to Surat to talk to Shinde. Number of MLAs with Shinde swell to over 20. 1.20 pm | Sena MLA Nitin Deshmukh’s wife says he has gone missing. Raut later says two Sena MLAs, including Deshmukh, were beaten up in Surat. 2 pm | NCP chief Sharad Pawar says path will emerge, says CM post internal matter of Sena. 2.30 pm | BJP MLA Sanjay Kute arrives at Le Meridien, Surat. 2.32 pm | Shinde tweets, “We are staunch Shiv Sainiks of Balasaheb Thackeray. We will never cheat anyone for power.” BJP’s Chandrakant Patil says Shinde rebellion not prearranged with BJP. 3 pm | Shinde removed as group leader of Sena legislature party. Is replaced by Ajay Chaudhari. 4 pm | Sena organises a show of strength by party workers at several locations in Mumbai, including Sena Bhavan in Dadar. 5-5.30 pm | Milind Narvekar and Ravindra Phatak meet Shinde. Shinde tells Sena leadership he is firm and Sena must leave MVA and form alliance with BJP for sake of Hindutva. Shinde says there is little chance of him changing his stand. CM reportedly calls Shinde and talks to him for 10-15 mins. Tells him to come to meet him in Mumbai and says things can be sorted out. Shinde refuses. 7 pm | CM holds meeting with Sena MLAs and MVA leaders to discuss possibilities and contingency plans. Congress leaders Ashok Chavan and Balasaheb Thorat attend.
