Prayagraj’s 1st microbrewery to open on August 20

PRAYAGRAJ: Here is some good news for zythophiles of Sangam City. In the days to come, fresh beer will be on offer for them as the city's first microbrewery is set to open from August 20 in the Civil Lines area. In the last quarter of 2021, the state excise department had invited applications for licences to be given under a June 2019 state government initiative, allowing beer plants to be set up at hotels, restaurants and clubs to increase the revenue of the state and also provide a boost in employment and tourism. Following this, two bar owners from the city had applied for licences to the state excise department for setting up microbreweries in their premises and one was given the go-ahead to set up a plant in Civil Lines. "As soon as the plant is installed and ready to operate, a licence for its running would be issued as per set norms," said district excise officer, Prayagraj, Jitendra Kumar Singh. The official added that this microbrewery will be ready to operate from August 20 and would offer beer of four different flavours - normal, fruit, spice, smoke. Normally, the beer available in markets is prepared in plants, packed and stocked in warehouses after which it goes to shops. However, the microbrewery beer is fresher as it can be kept for a maximum of three days. If it is over-produced in anticipation of more sales, the extra goods may have to be thrown away. Under the set norms, after the excise department invites private players to apply for getting a licence for breweries, the interested parties apply for the licence which is given after completing the due process. However, the permission to operate the brewery is only given after establishment of the plant and inspection by the excise department. In case of the first brewery in Prayagraj, the private party has been given the licence and the department has given a go ahead to start operating the same from August 20 onward. A microbrewery is a small unit that produces limited quantities of beer for captive consumption and is found mostly in establishments such as hotels and restaurants located in tourist hotspots. The state cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister had cleared the proposal for amending the UP Brewery Rules-1961 with UP Brewery (6th Amendment)-2019 to incorporate relevant changes to facilitate setting up of microbreweries. Many states like Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Haryana, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, etc., also have the provision of microbreweries in major cities and towns.
