Maharashtra javelin thrower Shivam Lokhare, 18, outwitted the more seasoned athletes at the senior State Meet on Thursday to bag a gold. His effort of 71.65m puts him in the 7th spot in the U-20 Asia season best list. The teenager’s gold-winning effort was more than five metres better than the silver medallist Akshay Ghong’e 66.76m.This was the first senior-level meet for the teenager who has won several national-level titles at the junior level with a 700 gms spear. His 70-plus throw with the standard 800 gms javelin proved that Lokhare had made the transition successfully. The talented thrower was first spotted by seasoned army coach Kashnath Naik, who has worked with top throwers like Annu Rani and Neeraj Chopra, at a domestic meet just three months back.“Back then he had a 62 plus throw with an 800m javelin. His distance was not that impressive but he had the qualities of a good thrower,” says coach Kashinath who also trains Manu DP of Karnataka, the India season leader behind Neeraj Chopra.It was a tough time for Kashinath to convince his commandant and selection panel at the Army Sports Institute to enroll young Lokhare. “They were not impressed with a 62 m throw. I asked them to trust me and see the results three months later. Today, Lokhare’s performance has proved what I had said,” says Kashinath who won the javelin bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.After taking in Manu, coach Kashinath was eagerly looking for another young talent to train. Despite Lokhare’s shortcoming in technique and power, Kashinath chose Lokhare because he ticked three main boxes: height, flexibility and explosiveness. “The rest you can add with training,” says Kashinath who has been coaching since 2013.Kashinath insists Lokhare is still very raw and needs a lot of refinement to compete at the global level. When Kashinath first saw him throw he found Lokhare committing a common error that most junior athletes do. “He was bending his elbow too early. We call it throwing with the elbow and that puts a lot of stress on the joints. It reduces the range of the throw and can cause injuries too,” he explained.“Ideally the throwing arm needs to remain extended and delayed as long as possible. But your arm can’t remain straight throughout the motion as bowlers do. It’s a mix in javelin throwing. The arm should bend only at the later stage of the throw,” he added.It may be a little difficult for lay people to grasp the nuance of javelin throw but Lokhare was quick to grasp. He was just eight years old when he first picked up the spear. “I always wanted to be a javelin thrower. I learnt the basics from throwers who used to train at the college grounds of an Arts college in Pune,” he says.Kashinath may have trained the best talents in the country but he finds guiding Lokhare the most difficult since he has not worked with a left-hander before. “It’s very difficult for me. I get confused all the time. I have actually told him that ‘whenever I say right, I mean left in your case.’ It took a while to adjust. I have to switch sides all the time during training. It’s like in cricket you have to constantly switch sides if you are facing a left-right combination,” he jokes.
PUNE: Heena Sidhu has faced many tricky situations in her 16-year-long career, but the dilemma the pistol shooter is facing these days, is beyond complicated. The mother of a 10-month-old girl is back to competitive shooting, and it isn't easy. The World-Cup gold winning pistol shooter has made her way to the shooting team for the National Games to be held in Gujarat and is looking forward to getting back into the national team, but with a little caution. "I think it is a good feeling to participate in the National Games. I represented Punjab in the last edition, this time I am going to participate for Maharashtra," Heena says. Heena has been away from shooting for almost three years and got back to the range only in January this year. "In 2019, I thought of taking a break for a couple of months, but before the break could end, Covid pandemic began and then we decided to have a baby. The break got extended to almost three years," she laughs. After coming back to train, Heena participated in the trials and managed a place in the top-16 shooters for the National Games. However, things are not the same for Heena. "I am working at a basic level right now. Physically, a lot has changed after the delivery. I lost the muscle memory, my body doesn't listen to me anymore, so there i s some frustration. But I am trying to get back to normal, slowly. I am at a stage where I know what mistakes I am making, but I am notable to rectify them," she says. No matter how difficult physically it is for Heena, her concerns are more mental in nature. It is natural that Heena is training to be in the Indian squad, but she is apprehensive of reaching to the top. "I want to be in the team, but I am scared too. I know that once I come to the team, I will have to be there in the camps, travel without my daughter and that scares me," she says.
PUNE: Residents around the bustling Garware College station area along the Pune Metro line have a new cause for worry these days. They have professed to being rather unhappy about the testing and trials of Metro rakes and tracks that are being conducted by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro) during late night hours at the spot - this, say the beleaguered residents, is leading to a lot of noise and causing disturbances at a highly inconvenient hour. The Metro runs up till Garware College station from the Vanaz end in the first phase of operations for this major public transport project of the city. But while commercial operations are slated during daytime, the trials are scheduled during night hours, lamented area residents. Shashi Karmarkar, who stays on Karve Road, shared that the noise is considerably loud. "Such testing and trials should be conducted during daytime and not at night. The Metro runs only up till Garware College station at present. But, with limited operations and reduced commuters' footfall in the last few months, the authorities can surely schedule trials during non-peak hours," he said. Residents also pointed out that they are not against the Metro project overall. However, they emphasised the need to ensure that localites do not face hardships owing to erratic work schedules. Ashok Patil, another such local resident, said that the trials and honking by the rakes can be heard till late hours. "Trials are not conducted during night hours on all days of the week. However, when it does happen, the operations make such loud noise that it is quite disturbing. Further, this is in addition to the station works that are already underway during night hours for many days now. The test can be shifted to the stretches that are not near to the residential areas," he suggested. MahaMetro recently extended the trial run of rakes towards Deccan Gymkhana. The trials of rakes are underway to check track alignment, breaking of rakes and other technical details. Officials of MahaMetro asserted that testing of rakes and tracks is necessary, but added that they would look into issues cited to work out a breakthrough. "The trials of rakes are scheduled at night as the trains are running all through the day for commuters," officials clarified. Hemant Sonawane, general manager (public relations) at MahaMetro, told TOI that the trials are underway on various technical parameters. "MahaMetro is now starting its Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) High Speed Train Testing. While executing the project, we are trying to ensure that citizens face minimum inconvenience. We will look into these issues of noise at night," Sonawane reassured.
MUMBAI: Four days after a man barged into the ladies compartment of a harbour local train and allegedly molested a 21-year-old lawyer, the GRP's crime branch picked him up on Saturday. Biharilal Yadav, the 43-year-old accused, told the police he was intoxicated on the day of the incident. On CCTVs, he was seen getting in and out of various compartments of the train at five stations. The lawyer had tweeted about the "insensitivity" displayed by GRP personnel when she went to its Andheri chowky to complain on September 21. A woman cop had asked her if the accused was her boyfriend while another asked why she hadn't beaten him up. Following her tweets, GRP commissioner Quaiser Khalid had instituted an inquiry into the conduct of the personnel. "Surveillance videos showed that the accused had boarded the train at Vile Parle station and was partially undressed at the time. Someone offered him a pair of shorts," an officer said, adding that he had got off at five stations when the train reached its destination at Goregaon station. Here, it started a new trip to CSMT and he boarded the train again, said the officer. Police teams have now learnt that Yadav had been arrested by Vashi GRP in 2021 for theft. "He is a labourer and previously lived in Kalwa. We checked all his hideouts and found that he had moved to Mahalaxmi," said senior inspector Arshuddin Shaikh. On the basis of tip-offs from informants, the police nabbed him on Saturday. Yadav's family lives in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. He had returned from his hometown eight days before the offence. He has been charged with sexual harassment under Indian Penal Code.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to flag off the third Vande Bharat Express, the semi-high speed train, between Maharashtra and Gujarat on September 30, the BJP has slammed opposition members for being opposed to the even faster Japanese bullet train project.Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Sunday, “Those questioning the bullet train are failing to understand its larger benefits. The entire mega project will be funded by Japanese company JICA. The loan component is at negligible interest rate of 0.01 per cent for 20 years with moratorium 15 years. We get the project free-of-cost. The advantage of technology transfer will be a huge benefit. Resources like steel and iron, among others, required for project will be sourced from India.”The BJP is showcasing the indigenously-manufactured semi-high speed train as an example of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The Vande Bharat Express is semi-high speed with top speed of 130 km/per hour in a trial run. It takes just 53 seconds to reach a speed of 100 km per hour.But Opposition leaders have claimed this speed makes the faster Japanese bullet train unnecessary and therefore the latter should not be built.NCP MLA Rohit Pawar said Sunday, “From the beginning questions were raised about the bullet train. When we have a credible alternative in indigenously designed and manufactured Vande Bharat Express with low expenditure almost matching the high speed of the bullet train, why this insistence on Japanese technology-driven bullet train?”The foundation stone for the bullet train was laid on September 2017. With its underground station at Bandra Kurla Complex, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is expected to incur cost of Rs 1.08 lakh crore. The project with 433.82 hectares land requirement has been accelerated after the BJP-Shinde Sena alliance came to power in June 2022. Almost 95 per cent of the land acquisition, which was started in 2018, has been done.

The association also informed that the decision comes after Minister Sawant failed to deliver his earlier promises in a meeting that was held on September 13.“It may be recalled that the Hon’ble Industrial Minister had called a meeting of all the taxi and auto Unions on 13.9.2022 in Mantralaya and made an appeal to the Unions to call off the strike. The Union agreed to call off the strike on the basis of the assurance given by the Hon’ble Minister. However the Hon’ble Minister has failed to honour his commitment and hence the Taxi and Rickshaw operators have decided to go on strike from 26th September 2022,” the statement added.
